Kilimanjaro's
360° Perspective
The Northern Circuit is the newest and longest path to the summit. Traversing the remote northern slopes, it offers the highest success rate and unparalleled solitude across the mountain's most pristine landscapes.
Northern Circuit Route
The Northern Circuit is the "Grand Circle" of Kilimanjaro, being the longest and newest route on the mountain. It offers a unique 360-degree traversal, allowing trekkers to experience nearly every side of the peak. This extended journey provides the maximum acclimatization window possible, resulting in the highest summit success rate of any route, typically exceeding 98%.
As we venture around the remote northern slopes, you'll escape the crowds found on more traditional paths. The route circles the northern flank of Kibo, offering views into the deep valleys and over the vast plains of Kenya. The solitude and silence of these northern slopes provide a meditative and immersive high-altitude experience found nowhere else on the mountain.
This trek is a visual odyssey through shifting climate zones. From the lush rainforests of Londorossi to the high-alpine desert of the Buffalo Ridge, every day reveals a new perspective of Uhuru Peak. By the time we reach the final summit camp at School Hut, your body will be perfectly tuned to the altitude, making the final push to the roof of Africa a triumphant conclusion to an epic journey.
Expert Recommendations:
The Grand Circle Advantage
The Northern Circuit is the ultimate Kilimanjaro experience, offering the most comprehensive views and the best biological preparation. Here is why our experts recommend this 360-degree traversal.
360° Panoramic Traversal
Unlike any other route, the Northern Circuit completely circles the peak. You'll witness every glacier and every valley from Londorossi to the northern slopes and finally the eastern approach.
Peak Biological Acclimatization
With 9 days on the mountain, your body doesn't just adapt—it thrives. This slow ascent results in a near 100% success rate for healthy trekkers who follow our guides' pace.
Northern Slope Solitude
While Machame and Lemosho converge on the southern faces, you'll be traversing the quiet northern slopes where few others venture, offering a true sense of exploration.
High-Altitude Wildlife
The northern slopes are known for rare eland and buffalo sightings at higher altitudes. The remote Buffalo Ridge offers the best chance to spot wildlife on the mountain.
Remote Alpine Plateaus
Traversing the Shira Plateau and the northern moonscapes provides a vast, open-air cathedral of rock and sky that feels completely detached from the world below.
98% Success Rate
Statistically the most successful route on Kilimanjaro. The gradual incline and time spent above 4,000m ensure you are physically ready for the final summit push.
Diverse Glacial Views
You'll see the Northern Glaciers, which are inaccessible from any other route, providing a unique photographic record of Kilimanjaro's changing ice cap.
The Ultimate Traverse
Choosing the Northern Circuit means you aren't just climbing a mountain; you're completing the most comprehensive alpine traverse available in East Africa.
The Path to Uhuru Peak
Success on Kilimanjaro is a marathon, not a sprint. Proper acclimatization is the key to reaching the roof of Africa safely and enjoyably.
Detailed Daily Program
We offer two variations of our Northern Circuit expedition. We strongly recommend the 9-day option for its superior acclimatization profile and higher success rate.
Day 01 Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
The adventure begins with a drive to Londorossi Gate for registration. We then continue to the Lemosho glades to start our trek. The first day is a gentle introduction through the lush, emerald-green rainforest. Keep an eye out for Colobus monkeys and exotic birds as we navigate the ancient canopy toward Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp.
Day 02 Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
We leave the rainforest behind as the trail climbs steadily into the heath and moorland zone. We cross several streams and ascend the Shira Ridge before dropping gently into Shira 1 Camp. From here, we get our first clear views of Kibo's peak and the expansive Shira Plateau.
Day 03 Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
An easier day across the Shira Plateau. We trek toward the volcanic massif of Kibo, crossing ancient lava flows. The gradual incline is perfect for acclimatization. Shira 2 Camp offers stunning panoramas of the Western Breach and the Shira Needles.
Day 04 Shira 2 to Moir Hut
We leave the main trail and head north toward the Lent Group. This is where the Northern Circuit truly begins to deviate. We trek through the alpine desert toward Moir Hut, a secluded camp at the base of the Lent Hills. This remote location offers great acclimatization walks and incredible sunset views.
Day 05 Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
We climb out of the Moir Valley and follow the Northern Circuit trail around the northern flank of Kibo. The terrain is rugged and remote, with few other trekkers in sight. We cross the Buffalo Ridge before descending to Buffalo Camp, where you'll enjoy views over the plains of Kenya.
Day 06 Buffalo Camp to Third Cave
We continue our traverse through the high-altitude wilderness. The path takes us through valleys and ridges on the northern slopes. This day is crucial for maintaining strength and red blood cell production. We arrive at Third Cave Camp, a peaceful site far from the busy southern routes.
Day 07 Third Cave to School Hut
A steady climb as we move back toward the eastern side of the mountain. The landscape is increasingly barren and volcanic. We reach School Hut, our camp for the final summit push. The afternoon is spent resting and preparing gear for the midnight departure.
Day 08 School Hut to Summit to Mweka Camp
Summit night. We begin the ascent in the dark, reaching the crater rim at Gilman’s Point by sunrise. From there, it's a further trek along the rim to Uhuru Peak. After celebrating at the Roof of Africa, we begin the long descent to Mweka Camp, dropping through the various climate zones.
Day 09 Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
The final descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. After signing out and receiving your certificates, we enjoy a farewell lunch with the crew before driving back to Arusha for a well-deserved celebration.
Day 01 Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
After registration at Londorossi Gate, we start our trek through the rainforest. The 8-day itinerary follows the same path through the lush canopy, where you'll experience the vibrant biodiversity of Kilimanjaro's lower slopes before reaching Mti Mkubwa Camp.
Day 02 Mti Mkubwa to Shira 2 Camp
A longer day as we bypass Shira 1 and head directly for Shira 2 Camp. We emerge from the forest into the heather zone, crossing the Shira Ridge. The ascent is steady, offering expansive views of the plateau as we settle into our higher camp for the night.
Day 03 Shira 2 to Moir Hut
We leave the southern circuit and head north. The terrain becomes more desolate as we enter the alpine desert. We trek toward the Lent Hills and set up camp at Moir Hut, a remote location that provides excellent acclimatization.
Day 04 Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
We follow the Northern Circuit trail around the northern flank. The solitude of this route is a major highlight. We cross several ridges and enjoy views of the jagged peaks of Mawenzi and the plains of Kenya before reaching Buffalo Camp.
Day 05 Buffalo Camp to Third Cave
The traverse continues across the northern slopes. The air is thinning, but the gradual pace helps your body adapt. We trek through a lunar-like landscape to Third Cave Camp, enjoying the unique perspectives of Kibo's northern glaciers.
Day 06 Third Cave to School Hut
A shorter but steep climb to School Hut. We are now on the eastern side of the mountain. The afternoon is dedicated to rest and final preparations for the midnight summit push. The sense of anticipation at this camp is palpable.
Day 07 School Hut to Summit to Mweka Camp
Summit Day. A midnight start leads us to the crater rim and eventually Uhuru Peak. The 360-degree journey culminates at the highest point in Africa. After the celebration, we begin the long descent to Mweka Camp, reflecting on the incredible traverse we've completed.
Day 08 Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
A final descent through the forest to Mweka Gate. We celebrate our success with a final lunch and say our goodbyes to the mountain crew before driving back to Arusha.

Northern Circuit Trek FAQs
Everything you need to know about trekking the longest and most successful route on Kilimanjaro.
Why is it called the "Grand Circle"?
The Northern Circuit is the only route that traverses almost the entire circumference of the mountain (approx. 360°). It avoids the busy southern trails by circling around the remote northern slopes, offering views of the glaciers from every angle.
What is the success rate of the Northern Circuit?
Because of its length and the "climb high, sleep low" opportunities, the Northern Circuit has the highest success rate on the mountain, consistently exceeding 98%. The 9-day itinerary is considered the gold standard for acclimatization.
Is it much more difficult than other routes?
While it is the longest route in terms of distance, the gradient is often more gradual than the Machame or Lemosho routes. The main challenge is the endurance required for 9 days on the mountain, but the superior acclimatization actually makes it feel easier for many.
Will I see many other trekkers?
No. One of the primary advantages of the Northern Circuit is its solitude. You will bypass the crowded camps of the southern routes, keeping the northern slopes almost entirely to yourself until you join the summit approach.
How cold does it get at the high camps?
At camps like School Hut (4,800m), temperatures can drop to -15°C (5°F) at night. However, because you are well-acclimatized by the time you reach these heights, your body is better equipped to handle the cold and recover quickly.
9 days versus 8 days: which should I choose?
The 9-day itinerary offers the ultimate acclimatization profile and a more relaxed pace. The 8-day version is condensed but still superior to most other routes on the mountain. If you have the time, the 9-day "Grand Circle" is highly recommended.
