The Classic "Whiskey" Path
to Mount Kilimanjaro.
Famous for its stunning scenery and challenging terrain, the Machame route offers a perfect blend of adventure and high summit success rates.
Machame Route
Machame, famously known as the "Whiskey Route," is the most popular path on Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers a spectacular adventure through six distinct climate zones, starting in the lush rainforest of the southern slopes. Unlike the easier Marangu route, Machame requires trekkers to sleep in high-quality tents, providing a more authentic and immersive mountain experience.
The route is celebrated for its "climb high, sleep low" opportunities, which are crucial for natural acclimatization. Days are filled with dramatic scenery changes, from the vast volcanic landscapes of the Shira Plateau to the imposing and photogenic Barranco Wall. This constant variety keeps the journey engaging, visually stimulating, and physically rewarding for every trekker.
While technically more demanding than some other routes, the Machame route—especially our recommended 7-day variation—boasts exceptionally high success rates. It reaches the summit via the scenic Stella Point, joining the Southern Circuit for a truly comprehensive and unforgettable Kilimanjaro experience. It's the ideal choice for those seeking a perfect mix of challenge and breathtaking African vistas.
Expert Recommendations:
The Whiskey Route Experience
As Kilimanjaro's most iconic path, the Machame route offers a perfect blend of high-altitude adventure and spectacular scenery. Here is why our experts recommend this route for your trek.
Optimal Acclimatization
The 7-day Machame itinerary is strategically designed for safety. By following the "climb high, sleep low" principle, especially on the Lava Tower day, your body adapts naturally to the thinning air, maximizing your summit potential.
Authentic Camping Spirit
Unlike the hut-based Marangu route, Machame is a pure wilderness experience. Sleeping in high-quality mountain tents under the vast African sky fosters a deeper connection with the mountain and your trekking team.
Panoramic Vistas
As you traverse the Southern Circuit, you enjoy ever-changing views of the Kibo massif. From the Shira Plateau's golden sunsets to the stark beauty of the alpine desert, Machame is a photographer's dream at every turn.
The Barranco Wall
This legendary part of the trek is a fun, non-technical scramble. Navigating the wall provides an incredible sense of achievement and some of the most dramatic perspective shots of the entire Kilimanjaro expedition.
Ecological Diversity
Machame passes through five distinct climate zones. You'll move from rich rainforests filled with exotic birds to the prehistoric Senecio gardens of the moorland, ending at the stark, glacial summit zone.
Strategic Southern Approach
By approaching from the south and south-west, you experience the mountain’s most impressive volcanic features. The route provides a powerful sense of scale as you move toward the final base camp at Barafu.
Mental Resilience
The variety of terrain on Machame keeps your mind engaged. The daily shift in landscape prevents fatigue from setting in, keeping you mentally refreshed for the ultimate challenge of the summit push.
Proven Success Rates
The 7-day Machame trek is one of the most successful routes for reaching Uhuru Peak. The gradual ascent profile ensures that most trekkers arrive at the summit feeling strong, capable, and exhilarated.
The Path to Uhuru Peak
Success on Kilimanjaro is a marathon, not a sprint. Proper acclimatization is the key to reaching the roof of Africa safely and enjoyably.
Detailed Machame Itinerary
We offer two variations of our Machame expedition. We highly recommend the 7-day option for its better acclimatization profile and higher summit success rate.
Day 01 Machame Gate to Machame Camp
The adventure begins at the Machame Gate, where the air is thick with the scent of the lush montane forest. After registration, we begin a steady ascent through the emerald-green canopy. This ecosystem is home to diverse wildlife, and you'll often hear the calls of exotic birds and spot Sykes' monkeys playing in the trees. The trail can be muddy, but the vibrant surroundings make for an immersive first day on the mountain. We reach Machame Camp by late afternoon, where your tents are already pitched at the forest's edge.
Day 02 Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp
We leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The path becomes steeper as we cross a valley and climb a rocky ridge. The landscape opens up, revealing the vast Shira Plateau and the first clear, imposing views of Kibo's glaciers. We traverse the plateau toward Shira 2 Camp, walking past ancient volcanic structures. The high-altitude air begins to feel crisp, and the surreal, prehistoric-looking Giant Lobelias dot the landscape, creating an otherworldly atmosphere for your second night.
Day 03 Shira 2 to Barranco (via Lava Tower)
A day dedicated to the "climb high, sleep low" strategy. We ascend into the Alpine Desert, a stark and rugged environment where the wind often howls. Our destination is the Lava Tower, a 300-foot volcanic plug at 4,630m. Having lunch at this altitude is critical for your red blood cell production. Afterward, we descend into the lush Barranco Valley. This descent is visually rewarding, taking you through gardens of massive Senecio and Lobelia trees, arriving at a camp nestled under the shadow of the Great Barranco Wall.
Day 04 Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day starts with the legendary Barranco Wall. Though it looks intimidating, it is a fun, non-technical scramble that rewards you with spectacular views of the Heim Glacier. Once atop the wall, the trail traverses a series of ridges and valleys on the mountain's southern face. This is one of the most scenic stretches, offering unique perspectives of Kibo's southern icefields. We arrive at Karanga Camp by early afternoon, allowing for maximum rest and recovery before the final approach to the base camp tomorrow.
Day 05 Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today’s trek is short but demanding due to the altitude. We leave Karanga and hit the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail. The landscape is now completely void of vegetation—a true alpine desert. We ascend toward Barafu (Ice) Camp, perched on a narrow, rocky ridge. This is your final base camp. We arrive by lunchtime, allowing for a full afternoon of rest and mental preparation. Your guides will perform a final health check and briefing as you prepare for the midnight departure to the roof of Africa.
Day 06 Barafu to Summit to Mweka Camp
The ultimate challenge. At midnight, under a spectacular star-lit sky, we begin the slow, rhythmic ascent. The climb to Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim is the most physically and mentally taxing part of the journey. As the first rays of the sun hit the Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding glaciers, you'll feel a surge of energy. A final push leads to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After a brief celebration, we begin the long descent to Mweka Camp, dropping through thousands of meters of elevation into the welcome warmth of the moorland.
Day 07 Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Your final day on the mountain is a joyful descent through the lush rainforest. The high-altitude desert is replaced by ancient, moss-covered trees and the sounds of life. We reach Mweka Gate by late morning, where you'll sign the park register and receive your official gold summit certificates. After a final farewell lunch with your dedicated mountain crew, we drive you back to Arusha for a well-deserved celebration and your first hot shower in a week.
Day 01 Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your adventure begins at Machame Gate. After registration, we begin a steady ascent through the lush, emerald-green montane forest. The trail can be muddy but is incredibly vibrant, filled with the sounds of exotic birds. We reach Machame Camp by late afternoon, situated at the edge of the forest canopy.
Day 02 Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp
We leave the forest behind and climb a rocky ridge into the moorland zone. The landscape opens to reveal the vast Shira Plateau and stunning views of Kibo's glaciers. We traverse the plateau to Shira 2 Camp, prepare for the higher altitudes ahead.
Day 03 Shira 2 to Barranco (via Lava Tower)
Today follows the "climb high, sleep low" strategy. We ascend to the volcanic Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch and acclimatization, then descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley, passing through the prehistoric Senecio forests to our camp below the Great Barranco Wall.
Day 04 Barranco to Barafu Camp
For the 6-day trek, we combine the Karanga traverse with the final ascent. After scrambling up the Barranco Wall, we continue across the southern ridges to Barafu base camp. It's a long, challenging day, but getting to base camp by late afternoon is essential for the midnight push.
Day 05 Barafu to Summit to Mweka Camp
At midnight, we begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. The climb is physically and mentally grueling, but reaching the summit at sunrise provides an unmatched sense of accomplishment. After celebrating, we begin the long descent to Mweka Camp for your final night.
Day 06 Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Your final descent through the lush rainforest. We reach Mweka Gate, receive our summit certificates, and share a final meal with our mountain crew before returning to Arusha for celebration and rest.

Machame Route FAQs
Everything you need to know about trekking the legendary Whiskey Route on Kilimanjaro.
How difficult is the Machame Route?
Machame is considered a challenging route due to its steep sections and the mental challenge of the Barranco Wall. However, its excellent acclimatization profile makes it very manageable for those with a good level of fitness.
What is the success rate for Machame?
Our 7-day Machame trek maintains an 85-90% success rate. The "climb high, sleep low" structure is highly effective for preventing altitude sickness and ensuring a strong summit push.
Do I need technical climbing skills?
No. Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek. While sections like the Barranco Wall involve light scrambling, no specialized rope or ice climbing skills are required.
How cold does it get at night?
At high camps, temperatures often drop to -10°C to -15°C (5°F to -5°F). We provide high-altitude insulated tents, but a quality four-season sleeping bag is essential.
What happens if I get altitude sickness?
Our guides monitor your oxygen saturation daily. If serious symptoms occur, our protocol is immediate descent. We carry backup oxygen tanks and have AMREF flying doctor rescue coverage for all treks.
Why choose 7 days over 6?
The 7th day adds an overnight stay at Karanga Camp, which provides an extra 24 hours of acclimatization before the final summit push. This additional rest often results in a much more enjoyable and successful summit night.
