Marangu Route

Marangu, famously known as the "Coca-Cola" route, is the oldest and most established path on Mount Kilimanjaro. It holds a unique distinction as the only route that provides shared A-frame hut accommodations instead of camping in tents. This makes it a popular choice for those who prefer the relative comfort of sleeping on a mattress and staying in permanent structures throughout their trek.

The journey begins at the Marangu Gate, taking you through vibrant rainforests where the sounds of tropical birds and monkeys accompany your initial ascent. As the trail progresses, you'll transition through the heath and moorland zones, eventually reaching the stark, beautiful alpine desert of the Saddle. The route follows a steady, relatively gentle incline, which contributed to its nickname—though the final summit push remains as challenging as any other path.

While some consider Marangu a "fast" route, we highly recommend the 6-day itinerary over the 5-day version. The extra day spent for acclimatization at Horombo Hut significantly increases your chances of a successful summit. Approaching Uhuru Peak from the southeast, the Marangu route offers a historic perspective of the mountain, passing through iconic locations like the Maundi Crater and the vast plains between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

Expert Recommendations:
Comfort & Accessibility

The Marangu route is the historic heart of Kilimanjaro trekking. Offering a unique balance of tradition and comfort, here is why our experts recommend this path for those seeking a classic mountain experience.

A-Frame Hut Comfort

Marangu is the only route where you swap tents for permanent A-frame huts. Staying in Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo huts provides better protection from the elements and the luxury of sleeping on real mattresses.

Gradual & Predictable Terrain

Often called the easiest route in terms of incline, the path to the Saddle is a steady, well-maintained trail. This makes it an excellent choice for those who prefer consistent pacing over rugged scrambles.

The Maundi Crater

Just a short walk from Mandara Hut, the Maundi Crater offers a spectacular vantage point. On clear days, you can see across to Kenya and get your first panoramic view of the mountain's lower slopes.

Iconic Zebra Rocks

Near Horombo Hut, the striking Zebra Rocks feature black and white mineral stripes. This is a favorite spot for acclimatization walks, offering a unique geological wonder and great photo opportunities.

The Saddle Lunar Landscape

The trek between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks takes you across "The Saddle"—a vast high-altitude desert. This lunar landscape provides a stark, hauntingly beautiful contrast to the lush forests below.

Strategic 6-Day Profile

While a 5-day option exists, our experts strongly advise the 6-day trek. The extra day at Horombo Hut allows for critical red blood cell production, dramatically increasing your summit success rate.

The Historic First Route

Walking the Marangu route is walking through history. As the first established path to the summit, you follow in the footsteps of the mountain's earliest pioneers through the southeast approach.

Efficient Return Path

Unlike other routes that descend via Mweka, Marangu uses the same path for descent. This familiar terrain allows for a faster and more efficient return to the gate to celebrate your achievement.

The Path to Uhuru Peak

Success on Kilimanjaro is a marathon, not a sprint. Proper acclimatization is the key to reaching the roof of Africa safely and enjoyably.

Detailed Daily Program

We offer two variations of our Marangu expedition. We strongly recommend the 6-day option for its superior acclimatization profile and higher success rate in the mountain huts.

Day 01 Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

2,720m 4-5 Hours 8km

After registration at the Marangu Gate, your journey begins with a gentle climb through the lush, emerald-green rainforest. You'll walk along well-maintained trails beneath a dense canopy, listening to the calls of exotic birds and perhaps spotting Blue Monkeys. The moisture-rich air keeps the environment vibrant as you ascend to Mandara Hut. Once settled, you can take a short walk to the Maundi Crater for your first panoramic view of the Northern Tanzanian landscape and the Kenyan border.

Day 02 Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

3,720m 6-8 Hours 12km

We leave the rainforest behind and enter the high moorland zone. The path opens up to vast views of the twin peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi. You'll pass through fields of giant groundsels and lobelias as the terrain becomes more exposed. The ascent is steady, allowing you to settle into a rhythm as the air begins to thin. Arriving at Horombo Hut, you'll join a small village of fellow trekkers and enjoy the legendary mountain hospitality in the comfort of your A-frame cabin.

Day 03 Acclimatization at Horombo Hut

4,120m 4-5 Hours 5km

This is the critical "Acclimatization Day" that defines the 6-day success rate. To help your body adjust, we take an acclimatization walk toward the Mawenzi Ridge, passing the striking Zebra Rocks—named for their black and white mineral stripes. We climb to roughly 4,100m before returning to Horombo for a hot lunch and a relaxed afternoon. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is essential for oxygenating your blood for the upper reaches of the mountain.

Day 04 Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

4,703m 6-7 Hours 10km

Today we cross "The Saddle"—a vast, high-altitude desert that stretches between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape is stark and silent, with little vegetation surviving at this height. The climb is gradual but the thinning air makes every step feel significant. Kibo Hut sits at the base of the summit cone, a stone structure that serves as the final launching point. We arrive early for a mountain dinner and immediate rest, preparing for the midnight push.

Day 05 Kibo Hut to Summit to Horombo

5,895m 13-15 Hours 16km

The ultimate challenge begins at midnight. We ascend the steep scree of the summit cone by torchlight, moving slowly ("Pole Pole") toward Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. From here, a final traverse around the snowy rim leads to Uhuru Peak—the roof of Africa. After a brief celebration at the summit, we begin the long descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and continue down to the relative warmth and higher oxygen of Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.

Day 06 Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

1,860m 6-7 Hours 20km

Your final descent takes you back through the heath and moorland, eventually re-entering the lush rainforest. The walk is longer but largely downhill, allowing you to reflect on your achievement. At the Marangu Gate, we sign out of the National Park and you receive your official gold certificates. We enjoy a final celebration with your crew before driving you back to Arusha for that well-deserved hot shower and rest.

Day 01 Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

2,720m 4-5 Hours 8km

Your classic 5-day Marangu trek begins at the park headquarters. After standard formalities, we enter the lush rainforest. The trail is well-trodden and gentle, allowing for a steady pace through the jungle. You may spot Colobus monkeys high in the ancient trees. We reach the group of A-frame huts at Mandara by late afternoon, providing a comfortable first night on the mountain with higher oxygen levels than higher camps.

Day 02 Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

3,720m 6-8 Hours 12km

We ascend through the transition zone into the moorland, where short shrubs replace the towering trees. The landscape opens up to reveal the stunning Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail is longer today, requiring sustained effort as the altitude increases. We reach Horombo Hut, a bustling mountain settlement, where you'll enjoy a hot meal and rest in the shared cabins. This is your base for the next phase of the ascent.

Day 03 Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

4,703m 6-7 Hours 10km

Without the extra acclimatization day of the 6-day route, today requires significant mental resilience. We cross the stark Alpine Desert known as "The Saddle." The terrain is rocky and wind-swept, with sparse vegetation. We reach Kibo Hut by early afternoon. It is essential to rest and hydrate immediately, as the summit push begins in just a few hours. Your guides will conduct a final gear check before the midnight departure.

Day 04 Kibo to Summit to Horombo

5,895m 13-15 Hours 16km

The most demanding day of the trek. We climb the steep volcanic scree to Gilman's Point on the crater rim. The freezing night air and high altitude make this a true test of stamina. Continuing to Uhuru Peak, you'll reach the highest point in Africa as the sun rises. The sense of achievement is unparalleled. We kemudian descend back to Kibo for a brief rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for your final night sleeping on the mountain.

Day 05 Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

1,860m 6-7 Hours 20km

A long but rewarding descent back to the park gate. You'll pass through the diverse zones of Kilimanjaro one last time, with the satisfaction of having reached the summit. At Marangu Gate, certificates are awarded and we say our goodbyes to the mountain crew. We provide transport back to Arusha for your first celebratory meal and a hot shower.

Marangu Route FAQs

Everything you need to know about trekking the historic "Coca-Cola" route.

What are the mountain huts really like?

The huts are basic but comfortable A-frame wooden structures. Mandara and Horombo huts have solar lighting and bunk beds with mattresses. You will share these spaces with other trekkers (4-10 per room). Communal dining halls provide a space to eat and socialize out of the wind.

Is Marangu really the "easiest" route?

Marangu is considered "easier" because it has a gradual incline and well-maintained paths. However, it has one of the lower success rates when attempted in 5 days. The final summit push is just as steep and challenging as any other route.

What is the summit success rate for Marangu?

On the 5-day itinerary, the success rate is roughly 50-60%. However, on our 6-day itinerary (which includes the crucial acclimatization day at Horombo), the success rate jumps to over 85%, making it a much safer and more enjoyable choice.

Why choose 6 days over 5?

The 6th day is a dedicated acclimatization day at Horombo Hut (3,720m). Staying an extra night here allows your body to produce the necessary red blood cells for the final ascent to 5,895m. We almost exclusively recommend the 6-day version for this reason.
